Description
The Mcewing Building Contractors is a mid-19th century structure that was originally part of a sugar refinery, with related buildings at the corner of St Michael Street now demolished. This building has three storeys plus a loft, is shallow in depth, and features a rectangular plan with a gabled roof. It has a long seven-bay front facing Bearhope Street, constructed from snecked rubble with ashlar dressings. The roof is an alste type. The building displays several glazing patterns, with most openings being segmental-arched and featuring shallow depth windows above ground level. There is a round-arched wide opening to Bearhope Street that has been converted into a window, and a flat-lintelled wide opening to Roxburgh Street that has also been altered. Additionally, the masonry extends eastwards at a single storey level, with a modern first floor added and a fire escape on the east wall.
