Description
The Joinery Works at 27-29 Croft Street in Dalkeith is an earlier to mid-19th century, three-storey workshop building divided into three sections (3-4-3), with a former tannery located in the center. The south elevation features rubble construction that is squared and snecked at the second floor, while the east and north elevations are made of brick.
On the south elevation facing Croft Street, there are three bays on the left. The central bay has a boarded door topped with a multi-pane fanlight, and to the right is a segmental-arched former pend, now featuring a recessed glazed door and timber ingoes, with a shield above the keystone voussoir. The left bay has sash and case windows at both the ground and first floors, while the second floor has two-light pivot frame windows. The central section consists of four wide bays, with a machinery door in the bay to the left of center, and a door with a raised surround flanked by windows in the outer left bay. There are four windows at the ground level in the bays to the right, including a small window at the far right, and wide timber louvred openings at the first and second floors, except for two windows in the outer left bay at the first floor. The three bays on the right include a machinery door in the left bay and three-light pivot frame windows on all floors, supported by steel beam lintels at the ground and first floors.
The east elevation features a window set in a timber panel at the center of the first and second floors. The west elevation is adjoined to No 25 Croft Street, which is listed separately. The north elevation has three outer bays on each side that are advanced and topped with piend and platform roofs, with a lean-to rubble addition attached at the ground level.
The building displays a variety of glazing patterns, including some 12-pane sash and case windows and some fixed panes. Coped skews separate the sections, and there is a rendered mutual stack between the left and center sections. The roof is covered with grey slates, and some original rainwater goods remain in place.
