Description

'Overtoun' is a two-storey villa built around 1884 in the Tudor-Gothic style, located to the south of Quarrier's Village near the main road. The building features squared and snecked pale sandstone ashlar with polished dressings, a splayed rubble base course, a moulded string course, and dentilled and bargeboarded eaves. Some gable apexes display half-timbering, and the first-floor openings have round-arched hood moulds.

An advanced square entrance tower with a pyramidal cap is positioned on the east side. Curved steps lead up to a corniced doorpiece, which has a projecting name plaque surrounded by ornate foliage. There is a single round-arched window on the first floor, flanked by ground floor windows, and a canted bay window to the right that returns at the north elevation.

The north elevation features an advanced wide three-light canted bay and a gabled round-arched dormer breaking the eaves to the left. Further irregular bays recede to the right, including a single-storey service entrance and wing at the far right. The south elevation has an advanced gable to the right and a large quadripartite canted bay to the left with a pierced stone parapet. Above this bay is a breaking eaves dormer with a round-arched hood moulding. There is also a single-storey wing to the far left with an advanced gable in the centre, tripartite round-arched windows with linked hood mouldings, and three narrow windows to the right of the gable.

The roofs are piended and covered with grey Scottish slate, featuring terracotta ridge cresting, ornamental clay cans, cast iron finials, and cast-iron rainwater goods. Inside, some etched glass remains in the windows and doors.
