Description

Bethesda, located at 45 Quarrier's Village, is a large T-plan villa and former post office designed by Robert A Bryden in 1881. This two-storey building features Gothic detailing and is situated on raised ground to the left of the main entrance to the village. The exterior is constructed of squared and snecked grey sandstone ashlar with polished dressing, and it has a bull-faced rubble base course, a broken string course, and overhanging dentilled timber eaves.

On the eastern elevation, the former post office is located at the far left, while the main house, which is two-storeys high, is advanced to the right. The post office includes a canted bay that returns at the south elevation and is adjacent to a wide recessed porch area with a lean-to roof supported by cast-iron columns. There is a square-plan entrance tower in the re-entrant angle on the left, featuring a round-arched doorway on the left return, hoodmoulded pointed arched bipartite windows on the first floor, a deep eaves course with pointed arched carved detailing, and a pyramidal cap-roof topped with a cast-iron finial. The centre of the building has a full-height wide 3-light canted bay, with three additional bays to the far right, which includes a moulded plaque above the centre window and two dormers that break the eaves. The north elevation has a flat-arched blind opening and a steeply pointed gabled dormer with a pointed-arch hood moulded window. There is also a door with a pointed-arched pediment and a carved tympanum at the northwest re-entrant angle.

The windows predominantly feature plate glass in timber sash and case frames, with some 4-pane timber sash and case windows. The roofs are piended and covered with grey Scottish slate, displaying a diamond pattern on the tower, along with terracotta ridge tiles and finials, ornamental clay cans, and cast-iron rainwater goods.

Inside, some etched glass remains in the windows and doors, and the main entrance vestibule has a timber panelled ceiling.
