Description
Eilean Shona House is a later 19th century gabled house that incorporates elements from a simple 2-storey, 3-bay house built in the late 18th or early 19th century. The exterior is primarily constructed of harl pointed rubble with tooled ashlar dressings, while the rear features some random rubble with harling, suggesting the presence of an earlier structure.
The southeast-facing facade is irregular with 2 storeys and 4 bays, featuring a gabled entrance porch located in an off-centre re-entrant angle, which includes a round-headed entrance. To the left, there is a projecting wing with a ground floor canted bay window, and to the right, a lean-to verandah connects to a square bay window with a lean-to roof. The windows are mainly bipartites with 2-pane glazing and wooden finials at the ends. The house has end and ridge stacks, and the slate roofs have projecting eaves. An irregular rear wing is mainly 2 storeys with an attic.
Inside, the decoration and fittings were designed by Robert Lorimer in 1897, showcasing a simple Arts and Crafts style. The dining room features moulded wooden chimney pieces, some adorned with simple carved floral motifs, and one is dated 1897 and initialled SCT (S. C. Thomson). The drawing room includes simple panelling, a brass grate with a marble surround, and a moulded mantelpiece. The entrance lobby has a panelled dado and a green marble surround to a small grate. The staircase features a "cut-out" floral motif on the panelled balustrade. On the first floor, the billiard room has simple panelling with a raised floral design and two original chimney pieces.
