Description

This is a rectangular graveyard, dated 1786 and associated with the West Parish Church at Kilmorack. The south-facing front elevation is harled, with pointed gables and tooled ashlar margins. The symmetrical design presents six bays, featuring square-headed doorways in the outer bays. These doorways have double plank doors fitted with decorative blacksmith's hinges, sneck latches, and large keyholes. Above the doorways are tall, round-headed windows with keystones. Four similar windows are centrally positioned, with blocked imposts. Smaller gallery windows are located in the east and west gables, and all fenestration retains its original multi-pane glazing. Two long, later 19th-century round-headed windows are set into the rear elevation, featuring matching architraves but with geometrical tracery and leaded glazing. A finialled birdcage bellcote sits atop the west gable apex, with a shaped stone finial marking the east gable’s apex. The roof is slate-covered, with dated (1786) skewputts on the front. The interior was recased in the later 19th century, with a gallery removed from the west end. The ceiling is braced, supported by engaged cluster columns. The building is now empty, with all fittings removed. The surrounding burial ground is enclosed by a rubble wall, incorporating an ashlar drinking fountain dated 1919 on the west side. A pedestrian entrance is flanked by a pair of square ashlar gate piers capped with rounded tops. A pair of late 19th-century rusticated ashlar gate piers, ornamented with shaped caps, mark the burial ground entrance. The ecclesiastical building is no longer in use and bears the dates '17' at the west skewput and '86' at the east. The graveyard is noted as West Parish Church Item 1 on the 1971 Statutory list.
