Description
Nigg United Presbyterian Church, built by Alexander Ross between 1871 and 1872, features a rectangular plan with a square tower at the center of the north gable, which rises one stage above the ridge. The church has four-bay flanks and is constructed of coursed rubble with tooled ashlar dressings.
The tower includes a round-headed entrance with a rusticated and battered base, flanked by paired lancets in the wall face and hoodmoulded quatrefoils above. In the upper stage of the tower, there are paired louvred round-headed windows set within a panel that has corbelled detailing. The roof is shallow pyramidal with projecting eaves that are raised over blind occuli in each wallhead, and it features a cast-iron weather vane.
The north gable is adorned with angle pilasters and corbelled wallhead detailing, with two round-headed windows flanking the tower. These are linked to four similar windows in the flanks by a continuous cill-band. The church has lattice glazing and a slate roof.
