Description
The Church of Scotland Parish Church in Nigg dates back to 1626, with renovations carried out from 1723 to 1725 and an enlargement in 1786. Further alterations were made in 1864 by Andrew Maitland. The church has a harled exterior and is designed in a T-plan, oriented east to west, with a T-wing to the north. It features ashlar margins and an 18th century birdcage bellcote adorned with corner ball finials at the apex of the west gable. The south wall contains three long multi-pane windows in the center, with doors leading to the outer bays. Inside, an important Pictish cross-slab is displayed at the west end of the church.
The windows are timber sash and case with 12-pane glazing, and the roof is slate with ashlar skews. Cast-iron rainwater goods are also present.
Inside the church, the east and west ends of the main kirk have been partitioned off, creating a Minister's room to the east and a chamber to the west, which was later used to house the Nigg cross-slab. The interior features later 19th century fittings arranged in a traditional T-plan layout, including a panelled demi-octagonal pulpit with a panelled and corniced back-board, and a coved and corniced ceiling. There are remains of an 18th century gallery, seating, and stairs in the west chamber.
Surrounding the church is a graveyard with various fine examples of 17th and 18th century funerary slabs, tabletop stones, headstones, and grave markers, including some of medieval origin. The boundary is marked by square-plan ashlar gatepiers with shallow pyramidal caps and tall, coped rubble walls that have later render.
