Description
Pitcalzean House is a rambling two-storey and attic house with an early 19th century core and several additions made throughout the 19th century. The exterior is harled with painted margins. Originally, the house faced south and featured a raised basement, with three bays including a central door flanked by tripartite windows on both the ground and first floors, as well as two piended dormers and margined end stacks.
Around 1830 to 1840, a central projecting wing was added, which is two storeys high with two bays, featuring tripartite windows on both floors, a bowed gable, and a piended roof that houses the dining and drawing rooms. In the later 19th century, the house was re-orientated to face west, resulting in the current three-bay gabled facade. This facade includes a recessed central bay with an entrance, round-headed flanking lights, a fanlight, and a panelled door.
A balcony supported by cast-iron columns features a decorative cast-iron balustrade that links the outer bays to form a porch. The outer canted bay windows rise to the first floor and are topped with scalloped parapets and finialled skews, while a shaped gable sits above the narrow centre bay. There are additional service wings at the rear, and the house displays various glazing patterns along with corniced end and wallhead stacks, all under a slate roof.
Inside, the first-floor drawing room features a coved plaster ceiling dating from around 1830 to 1840.
