Description
The Achanalt Power Station and Dam, part of a hydroelectric scheme in the Conon Valley, was designed by architect James Shearer for the North of Scotland Hydro Electric Board in 1952 and began generating power in 1957. This compact, tall, single-storey building features two bays and is built into a cliff on the northwest side, with a tailrace that oversails to the southeast. The structure has a random rubble exterior with advanced ashlar eaves and surrounds, situated within a narrow gorge directly next to the River Bran.
The power station includes a large vehicular door on the northwest side, with a small recessed window above it. To the southeast, there is a large tri-partite window with transoms and mullions. Additionally, there is a boarded teak vehicular access doorway that incorporates a smaller pedestrian picket door on the northwest side.
To the southwest of the power station is a fish pass, which consists of a cascade of linked pools made from concrete and natural bedrock.
Inside, the power station has a predominantly functional and plain interior, featuring a deep turbine pit on the southeast side and offices and workshops at the rear. A large gantry crane is incorporated at the roof level, with reinforced gantry and rails along the eastern and western walls.
