Description
Scatwell House is a mid to late 19th century shooting lodge, which may incorporate an earlier core. This rambling structure is single storey with an attic and is built from rubble with tooled ashlar dressings. The southeast front features three bays that project outward, with a central gabled porch that has a round-headed entrance. This entrance is flanked by mullioned and transomed windows set in a canted bay to the right. To the left, there is a further irregular five-bay range that is set back. The garden front is gabled and has some modern alterations.
On the northeast side, there is a gabled bay with a canted mullioned and transomed window on the left, which is connected by a wall to a stumpy drum tower that is harled and topped with a conical roof. A modern glazed sun parlour with an arcaded front is positioned against the linking wall. The building features varied fenestration, primarily with 2-pane glazing, and decorative finialled bargeboards on all main elevations. Additionally, there are two large carved stone coats of arms from the later 19th century set into the rear wall. The roofs are slate, with coped end and ridge stacks.
The community centre and cottages, also from the later 19th century, form an L-plan single storey and attic range. This includes three two-bay cottages and a fishing rod room. These structures are made from harl pointed rubble with tooled rubble dressings. The entrance to the gable end cottage is flanked by a pair of canted bay windows with bipartite glazing, linked by a slated canopy. The two outer cottages also have entrances flanked by bipartites. Six gabled dormers break the wallhead, and the windows have 4-pane glazing. A verandah masks the entrance to the rod room, and the entrance to the community centre is located in the re-entrant angle. The roofs are slate, with coped ridge stacks and a pair of louvred ridge ventilators topped with ogee lead caps.
A walled garden made of rubble backs onto the range of cottages and the community centre.
