Description

The 'Barracks' and Servant's Tunnel at Invermoriston House is a single-storey building dating from around 1810, featuring four bays and a basement. The structure is constructed from coursed bullfaced rubble, accented by polished sandstone ashlar margins and dressings, with random rubble used for the basement frontage, which also has ashlar dressings. The north and south elevations are symmetrical, with the center two bays slightly advanced, while the rear has blind fenestration. The southern basement area features a sunken court and former entrances to the rear service area of the earlier Invermoriston House. A polished ashlar band course distinguishes the ground floor and basement.

There are entrances located in the east and west gables of the ground floor, which are obscured by later timber porches. The basement also has entrances, and all ground floor windows are framed with ashlar margins and feature rusticated long and short detailing with 12-pane glazing. The building has ashlar quoins at all corners, paired corniced ridge stacks, and a shallow piended slate roof with projecting eaves.

Access to the sunken forecourt on the east side is provided by a flight of steps that leads to a cast-iron pedestrian gate with spearhead detailing, accompanied by matching railings that serve as guard-rails for the sunken court and as a balustrade for the bridge over the servants' tunnel. The servants' tunnel, featuring a tooled ashlar arch ring, connects the basement area to the lane on the west side, passing beneath the driveway.
