Description

Mains of Ardersier is a house dating from around 1800, featuring two storeys and an attic over a basement, with three bays. The east front facade is constructed of red rubble that is squared, complemented by contrasting tooled sandstone dressings. The central door is accessed by a short flight of steps, and there are later double casement dormers with curved heads.

At the rear, there is a large wing from the early 19th century, also two storeys and an attic, which is harled with tooled margins. This wing has two small piended dormers and a piended roof. The windows mainly consist of 4- and 12-pane glazing. The main house has coped end stacks, while the rear wing features a large hipped wallhead stack, all covered with slate roofs. There are various single-storey extensions of different dates attached to the house.

The property includes gate piers, which are square channelled ashlar with coursing that is highlighted by contrasting painting. These piers have shallow pyramidal caps topped with small ball finials.

The boundary between the parishes of Ardersier and Petty runs through Ardersier Village along Stuart Street. Notable nearby buildings include No. 2 Stuart Street and The Old Toll House, which are listed in the Petty Parish records.

The architectural development of Ardersier village in the 18th century reflects its role as a service and residential area for Fort George, characterized by regular housing along the High Street, with both front elevations and gable ends. Despite some modern single-storey properties, Nos. 11-16 High Street are included in a group for their significant gable ends that contribute to the street's character.
