Description
The Murray Memorial at Shinness is an 1877 obelisk built in tooled ashlar stone, supported by a square plinth inscribed with lettering and standing on a roughly dressed granite stepped base. The memorial was erected to the memory of Kenneth Murray of Geanies (Easter Ross), who reclaimed the lands of Shinness, and to commemorate his services to the Duke of Sutherland and to agriculture. The obelisk itself is 33 feet high. Groome’s Ordnance Gazetteer of Scotland, published in 1885, provides additional details.
