Description
The Well of the Seven Heads Monument is an 1812 monument built of polished ashlar. It consists of a square, corniced plinth on a moulded base, supporting a short, panelled obelisk topped with a finial made up of seven masks surmounted by a stone hand gripping an iron dagger. An inscription is present on the plinth, written in Latin, English, French, and Gaelic.
The monument was erected in 1812 by Colonel McDonnell of Glengarry, commemorating an event in 1663 when the two sons of the 12th MacDonald of Keppoch were murdered. Following the subsequent tracing and killing of seven murderers at Inverlair, near Tulloch, in 1665, their heads were washed in a spring by the monument before being presented to the Chief at Invergarry Castle. The monument is located near Loch Oich.
