Description

The Church of Scotland in Invergarry was built in 1864 by Alexander Ross, and subsequently enlarged in 1896. It is a simple Gothic cruciform building, oriented with a long elevation running north to south. The exterior is constructed of grey rubble stone with tooled red sandstone dressings. A gabled projecting entrance porch is located on the south-east side, featuring a double plank door. A stumpy, broached spire rises from the north-west, featuring pointed-headed, louvred windows on each face of the tower, linked by a continuous hoodmould. Long, triple lancet windows illuminate the south and west gables. Similar paired lancets with a bulls' eye window are present on the east gable, while the north and south elevations incorporate squat, point-headed tripartites. The roof is slate, with a decorative tile ridge.

The interior is simple and low-ceilinged. An octagonal polished granite pulpit, with red granite panels matching those found at a nearby fort, stands prominently. Tiled floors and plain-grained wood pews are present. Several mural monuments commemorate members of the Ellice family.

A simple coped rubble wall surrounds the churchyard, containing a pair of low grey granite square gate piers with red sandstone plinths and shallow pyramidal caps; simple double wrought- and cast-iron gates complete the entrance. A drinking fountain dated 1872 is built into the churchyard wall.

The church remains in ecclesiastical use as the Quoad Sacra parish of Glengarry, established in 1870. A plaque above the entrance door reads "KIE, 1864. Enlarged by Eliza S. Ellice, 1896." Memorials are dedicated to Edward Ellice of Glengarry and Glenquoich, who died in 1880, and Edward C Ellice (1858-1934) and his wife Margaret (1865-1929).
