Description
The Old Parish Church in Halkirk is a T-plan church dating from 1753, substantially repaired in 1833. Constructed of harled rubble with tooled ashlar dressings and margins, the rear (north) wing is slightly lower than the main portion and may be a later addition from 1833. The main entrance is now located in the east elevation of the rear wing. The south elevation features two large segmental-headed windows in the centre, flanked by smaller, similarly detailed windows in the outer bays. Gallery windows, similarly detailed, are found in the east and west gables; a ground floor window is present in the west gable, blocked at the east. The front elevation windows have multi- and 12-pane glazing with delicate astragals. A birdcage bellcote with a ball finialled, ogee cap sits atop the west gable apex, and the roof is covered with local slate. The church interior has had all seats and fittings removed. The associated burial ground is enclosed by a coped flagstone rubble wall and contains a tightly packed collection of 18th, 19th, and 20th century table and upright tombs, accessed by two pairs of rubble gate piers. Ground floor windows in the east and west gables may have served as former entrances. The building is no longer in ecclesiastical use.
