Description
Sordale Farm is an early to mid-19th century farmstead, likely constructed over an extended period. It features a polygonal arrangement of two single-storey, three-bay cottages, along with a steading range that is mainly single-storey. This steading includes cart sheds, byres, stables, and a barn with a winnowing floor, all of which enclose a central courtyard. The buildings are made of rubble and are primarily roofed with Caithness slates, although some sections have been re-roofed with either corrugated asbestos or iron.
The steading is situated on a west-facing slope, with the stable rising to two storeys and a loft above, while the byre runs downhill to facilitate drainage. The principal cottage faces south, featuring a three-bay front with a central door and end stacks. A long wing at the rear includes a room directly behind the cottage with its own door for a farm servant, as well as a cart and implement shed that has three segmental-headed arches. Additionally, there is a further single-storey, L-plan cottage with an entrance in the southeast re-entrant angle and a symmetrical three-window facade facing north.
