Mackintosh Buildings, 80-82 High Street, Nairn

The Mackintosh Buildings, located at 78 High Street in Nairn, were designed by John Rhind in 1869 and are built in the Italian Renaissance style. The building features three storeys and an attic, with a seven-bay front facing High Street and a canted corner bay that originally housed the entrance. The facade on High Street is finished in polished ashlar, while the shorter frontage on Douglas Street is made of coursed rubble with polished ashlar dressings.

On the first floor, there are round-headed pilastered windows, which are divided by engaged Corinthian columns that rest on the dies of the first-floor balustrade. The second floor has galleried windows with squat Corinthian columns and slender dividing console brackets. Above, there is a modillioned cornice topped with a balustrade parapet. The corner features a squat dome with cast-iron cresting, along with three bargeboarded dormers, and two additional similar dormers. The entrance on Douglas Street has a bracketed cornice, and part of the original pilastered shop front on the ground floor remains visible beneath modern fascias.
