Gate Lodge, Fort Augustus Abbey

The Gate Lodge at Fort Augustus Abbey, built around 1880 and likely designed by H. Hanson, is a substantial two-storey structure with three bays. It is constructed of bull-faced rubble with contrasting ashlar sandstone dressings. The northern front is symmetrical with three bays, featuring ground floor bipartite windows with shouldered lintels and three gabletted dormers in the mansard roof. The eastern gable has a two-bay return with a recessed glazed door and a bipartite window similar to those on the northern front. On the first floor, there are two pointed-headed cusped windows along with a small central attic window, all with two-pane glazing. At the rear, there is a single-storey, single-bay wing. The building has corniced end ridge stacks and slated mansard roofs with tiled ridges, as well as a small single-storey lean-to wing at the western gable.
