Description
The War Memorial Hall, originally a Drill Hall, was designed by John Robertson and built in 1891, with a war memorial added to the porch around 1918. This single-storey building features a two-storey wing at the rear and is three bays wide, forming a roughly L-shaped plan with a porch at the front. It is designed in an Italianate style and constructed from squared and coursed rubble with yellow polished ashlar dressings. The principal and side elevations have large semi-circular arched windows beneath the gables, and the building has deep overhanging eaves with exposed rafter ends. The war memorial includes a plaque set within a round arched recess that mirrors the shape and dimensions of the windows, topped with a battlemented parapet. The windows feature a mix of 7 and 9-pane glazing in timber fixed panes, and the roof is covered with grey slates, complemented by cylindrical chimney stacks with yellow clay cans.
The interior, observed in 2015, showcases a well-preserved late 19th-century decorative scheme, including timber panelled doors. The main hall boasts a striking hammerbeam roof, alongside a timber chimneypiece and decorative incised dado that runs around most of the building.
