Description

The Old Bridge in Fort Augustus is a single span of an earlier 18th century multi-span bridge that remains on the north bank of the river. It is connected to the south bank by a 19th century four-span wooden trestle bridge. The earlier bridge is constructed of rubble and features a single segmental dressed arch ring that springs from a low pier. This pier is supported by substantial ashlar triangular cutwaters that rise as heavy triangular buttresses.
