Description

This is a small Episcopal chapel built in 1901 by Ross & Macbeth, situated within the courtyard of the ruinous Courthill House. It is located at the north-west corner of the house and is accessed through an arched pend. The chapel is constructed from harled rubble with tooled dressings. It comprises a three-bay nave with an entrance on the south-east side, and a single-bay chancel linked by a square tower. The tower has single windows on its north and west elevations, with blind panels above a string course. It features a moulded eaves cornice and a steeply pitched piended slate roof. A small, single-storey, two-bay vestry connects the tower and chancel to the arched pend, both having slate roofs. The interior is plain, with a Romanesque chancel arch. Stained glass windows commemorate various members of the Murray family. A marble bust of a lady, sculpted by H Weeke and dated 1848, is also present. The chapel is an active ecclesiastical building. Courthill House was purchased by C.J. Murray, MP, from Dugald Stewart in 1882. The chapel was founded by Lady Murray in memory of her husband, Hon. Sir Charles A. Murray KCB, PC, and their son Cecil Henry Murray, who died in 1895 and 1896 respectively. A chancel window is dedicated to Alasdair Murray, who died in South Africa in 1900, and a smaller window to Elspeth Murray, who lived from 1881 to 1885.
