Description
The Former Black Isle Combination Poorhouse, also known as Ness House, is a two-storey and attic building designed in 1859 by William Lawrie. It features a gabled H-plan layout in a plain Traditional Scots style, with a two-storey rear wing added around 1866. The building is set in garden grounds that reflect its former segregated layout. It has a rendered exterior with painted ashlar margins, straight painted stone quoins, and corbelled skewputts. The central section has three bays, flanked by two advanced gabled blocks, while the side elevations consist of four bays, with the center two bays featuring a wide gabled chimney. There are 19th-century lean-to extensions on both the north and south sides. The entrance includes a timber door with a fanlight above. The windows are 12-pane timber sash and case, although some modern windows have been added to the upper northwest and lower southwest elevations. The roofs are pitched and predominantly covered with grey slates, featuring ridge and gable stacks. The interior, as seen in 2012, retains its original plan-form, with timber dog-leg stairs on either side of the entrance hall and a skylight above leading to the upper levels.
