Description
Croy Church of Scotland Parish Manse is a 2-storey and attic house built in 1855 by William Lawrie for James Matthews, featuring a style reminiscent of Thomas Mackenzie. The house faces east and has three bays, characterized by its unusual boat-shaped gables that sweep down to the eaves. The front is constructed of coursed rubble, accented with contrasting tooled and polished ashlar dressings, while the flanks are harled.
The outer bays are advanced, and there is a single-storey square projecting porch that includes a panelled door and a parapet adorned with angle ball finials. A string course runs across the flanking bays. The central first-floor windows are framed by polished ashlar jambs and topped with an unusual Moorish-shaped ashlar gablet. Large ground floor windows flank the entrance, with windows on the first and attic floors diminishing in size. The gables feature symmetrical fenestration with a small apex attic light and multi-pane glazing. All gables are topped with attenuated ball finials, and the house has coped end stacks and slate roofs. At the rear, there is a gabled single-storey service range.
