Description

Croy Parish Church of Scotland, dated 1764 and repaired in 1829, features later 19th century internal alterations and was re-cast in the style of John Robertson from Inverness. The church is a rectangular structure built of harl pointed rubble with tooled ashlar margins and dressings. The long symmetrical south elevation is illuminated by four long pointed-headed windows, each with simple Y-tracery and late 19th century leaded pane glazing. There are round-headed off-centre entrances in the east and west gables, each featuring a fanlight. Both gables have a central pointed-headed gallery window with original multi-pane glazing and intersecting tracery in the fanlights and windows. A small datestone is set above the west gallery window. The rear elevation has two diminutive rectangular gallery lights at the wallhead in the extreme outer bays, with tooled angle margins. At the east gable apex, there is a birdcage bellcote topped with a stone ball finial at the west; the roof is slate.

Inside, the church was re-cast to the east in the late 19th century, featuring a gallery at the west with a concave bowed front and cusped panelling. The ceiling has cusped detailing, and there are grained wood elements including the pulpit, pews, and doors. Various 19th century mural monuments are present, mainly dedicated to the Rose family of Kilravock and the Davidsons of Cantray.

Adjacent to the church is a watch-house, built around 1800, which is a simple small rectangular single-storey building made of harl pointed rubble with tooled ashlar margins. It has an off-centre door in the elevation with a diminutive wallhead vent above, and a pair of bull's-eye vents in the north elevation flanking a wallhead stack, along with a single similar bull's-eye vent in the centre of the south front. The watch-house features a simple blocked eaves cornice and a piended slate roof.

The burial ground is enclosed by roughly coped drystone walls that incorporate the watch-house, with three entrances, each flanked by simple square tooled rubble gate piers.
