Description
The Douglas Hotel, located at 21-41 Union Street in Inverness, was designed by William Lawrie in the office of James Matthews in 1863. This Italianate building is constructed of ashlar and features three storeys plus an attic. The Union Street facade has 16 bays, with shopfronts on the ground floor. The first floor includes tripartite windows with round-arched lights at the 3rd and 14th positions, while the other windows are architraved and have consoled cornices. On the second floor, the windows have lugged architraves, with tripartite windows again at the 3rd and 14th positions. The building has bowed corners and a four-bay front facing Drummond Street, as well as a three-bay front on Church Street. The roof features segmental-headed wallhead dormers. There were additions made to the roof at the east end by Erskine, Thomson & Glass in 1937.
