Description

1-17 Union Street in Inverness is an Italianate building designed by William Lawrie in 1863. It is constructed from ashlar and features three storeys with an attic in the centre. The front facade has 19 bays, with original shopfronts located at Nos 1 and 5 on the ground floor. The central five bays include round-arched bipartite windows on the first floor and pilastered bipartite windows on the second floor. The centre bay is accentuated by channelled strip pilasters and is topped with a segmental pedimented gablet. The building also has four dormers and a balustrade, along with a French pavilion roof.

The outer wings each consist of seven bays, featuring a central arched door and shops on the ground floor. The first and second floors have tripartite windows at the channelled strip pilastered centre bay. The windows are architraved and have balustered aprons on the first floor. The north-east corner is canted and topped with finials and urns. Additionally, there is a two-bay front facing Academy Street, and the building is finished with a bracketed cornice.
