Description
Englishton House is an early 18th century house, with a later 19th century frontage block. It is a two-storey and attic house with an irregular north frontage. The main part of the house is harled, with some ashlar margins, while a 19th century canted bay window projects from the right-hand outer bay, rising the full height of the building and finished with a piended roof and a central swept dormer window that breaks the eaves. An off-set entrance is situated in the north-west front, flanked by small windows, with an irregular pattern of windows on the first floor.
A single-storey, four-bay addition is set against the slope on the south-east side, with an off-centre entrance. The house retains varied glazing patterns, end and wallhead stacks, and steeply pitched slate roofs, with a piended roof on the rear wing.
The name "Englishton" is thought to mean "the place of the lowlander or English speaking person.” The house was formerly occupied by members of the Fraser of Lovat family and General Wade in 1720. During the 19th century, it operated as a private lunatic asylum, and inmates were transferred to Craig Dunain in 1864. Further information can be found in Transactions of the Gaelic Society of Inverness and Hugh Barron's 'Notes on the Aird'.
