Description
The North Lodge and gate piers, part of the Glengarry Castle Hotel, were likely designed by David Bryce around 1866. The lodge is a Gothic-style, two-storey, cruciform building with two bays. It is constructed of coursed rubble with tooled sandstone dressings. The north front features a gabled design with an entrance porch set in a north-east re-entrant angle. The porch has a crenellated parapet. Flanking the porch is a shallow rectangular bay window with a stone slab pyramidal roof and three-light, pointed-headed windows. Above the bay window is a blocked hoodmoulded window that has been filled with an Ellice monogram and inscription. The east and west sides each have a gabled single bay with pointed-headed bipartites on the ground floor and pointed-headed windows with Y-tracery on the first floor. A single-storey, single-bay rear wing has a steeply pitched piended roof. Other details include sawtooth skews, a tall central coped stack, and slate roofs.
The lodge is flanked by cast-iron spearhead railings set on a low coped wall, and connected to a pair of plain, square ashlar gate piers with shallow pyramidal caps. Matching cast-iron spearhead carriage gates complete the ensemble. The inscription "Pax intrantibus salus exeuntibus” is visible.
