Description
Nairn Viaduct, located over the River Nairn in Clava, was opened in 1898 and designed by engineer Murdoch Paterson. This impressive structure features a high, 29-span design made of bullfaced red dressed rubble with tooled ashlar dressings. The arch rings, which are also made of tooled ashlar, are round-headed, with each measuring 50 feet, except for the arch crossing the River Nairn, which measures 100 feet. The south end of the viaduct is curved to align the approach with the hillside. In total, the viaduct measures 1,800 feet (549 meters) in length.
