Description

St Donnan's Roman Catholic Church and its presbytery in Cleadale, Eigg, were built in 1910 and feature a simple Gothic design with gabled roofs. The buildings are harled and overlook the Bay of Laig.

The church has a rectangular nave with a lower gabled chancel and a half-piended vestry that is set at right angles. It is supported by battered buttresses that divide the nave into four bays. The church is adorned with pointed-arch windows, a bipartite window with an oculus in the chancel return, and a cinquefoil window in the outer gablehead. The entrance features a shoulder-arched door with two-leaf boarded doors, a large pointed recess, and a multi-foil window above, which is now shielded, along with small flanking windows. A plain gabled bellcote sits at the gablehead above the crossing, with cross finials above the entrance gable and chancel.

The church has lead-paned glazing with a border pattern and timber hoppers. The roofs are slate with terracotta ridge tiles, and there is a stack on the vestry with two terracotta cans.

The presbytery has a gabled bay at the center of the entrance elevation, featuring a gabled porch with a panelled door and two first-floor windows. To the right at ground level, there is a canted window with stop-chamfered arrises, and a single window to the left. Gabled dormers are present, and there is a link to the church on the right return with two first-floor windows. The rear has openings at ground level but is blank at the first floor.

The timber windows are in poor condition or blocked as of 1997. The presbytery also has a slate roof with coped skews and gablehead stacks, along with octagonal cans and a cast-iron rooflight.

The interiors were not seen in 1997.
