Description
Dower House, Highfield House is a picturesque single-storey U-plan cottage built around 1830, with alterations made in the mid-19th century. It features a five-bay south-facing front and is harled with ashlar margins. The central door is flanked by mid-19th century side-lights and is set within an advanced, steeply gabled porch that has barge boarding and is supported by two painted wooden Roman Doric columns. This porch connects to canted bay windows on either side. The door is panelled. The wings of the cottage project from the outer bays at the rear, creating a U-plan court that has been largely infilled with lean-to extensions and modern box dormers. The windows include 1830s lying pane sashes and mid-19th century eight-pane casements. The roof is slate and features round end and ridge stacks on square bases, along with decorative cast-iron ridge cresting. A decorative cast-iron weather vane is positioned on the porch.
