Description

The Westerdale Bridge, over the River Thurso, was built in 1834. It is a twin-arched bridge constructed of rubble stone, with dressed rubble forming the arch rings. The bridge features triangular cut-waters rising as buttresses against the centre of each arch spandrel, and a shallow end buttress. Dressed rubble coped parapets run along the bridge, pierced by small square drainage vents above each arch ring. The approach to the bridge is slightly splayed, with an overall span of 80 feet. The New Statistical Account, revised in 1840, references the bridge on page 78.
