Description
Dated 1844, the Westerdale Church of Scotland is a simple, low T-plan church, originally a Free Church, and still in ecclesiastical use. The building is constructed of rubble with tooled rubble dressings. It features a projecting room for the Minister in the centre of the south elevation, with a stack on its eastern side. The north wing is attached to the main body of the church. Small porches mask the entrances in the north-east and north-west re-entrant angles. The south elevation has four shallow, pointed-headed windows, with similar windows in the gables and rear wing. The windows have wooden mullion and transom details, with plain Y-struts in the upper lights and lattice pane glazing. The roof is covered with artificial slate.
The interior is plain, and the rear wing has been partitioned into a separate room. Seating is slightly raked. A circa 1860 Gothic panelled pulpit, with angle carved wooden ball finials and a lower front session clerk's desk, is positioned at the rear. The pulpit has a wide, coved tester with moulded ribs and cornice decorated with four simple pendants.
The church is enclosed by a simple roughly coped drystone wall with a pair of wooden gates that have Gothic detailing.
