Description
Glenjade Cottage is a pair of single-storey cottages, now converted into a single dwelling, dating from around 1840–1860. The buildings face onto a garden on the northern edge of Laggan Locks on the Caledonian Canal.
The cottages are harled with pitched slate roofs and end and ridge stacks. Each cottage originally had three bays with a centre door flanked by a gabled porch; the right-hand porch features 4-pane side windows. Glazing is predominantly in 3-pane timber frames, with replacement glazing to the rear elevation. A rubble and timber lean-to adjoins the canal-side elevation. The property includes rubble walls with coped coping to the garden frontage.
The cottages were likely constructed to accommodate additional lock keepers to assist with maintenance of Laggan Locks, which were completed in 1821 but leaked periodically thereafter. A previous listing record from 1971 noted a construction date of 1853, though documentary evidence for this has not been verified; map evidence and architectural style support this date as possible.
The interior was examined in 2013 and found to have been remodelled into a single building, currently in use as offices. Externally, the cottages have been little altered since construction, retaining their original footprint, profile, and setting, including the front garden.
Glenjade Cottage forms part of a group of associated buildings around Laggan Locks, including a bothy, workshop, and lock-keeper's control booth. Lock keepers' cottages were typically single-storey with living room and bedroom accommodation, often enlarged as living standards improved. They were customarily set within gardens for vegetable cultivation and keeping poultry and animals.
Laggan Locks marks the highest point of the Caledonian Canal at 106 feet above sea level, forming part of the section linking Loch Lochy to Loch Oich. The entire Caledonian Canal is designated as a Scheduled Monument (Scheduled Monument No 5295), identifying it as of national importance to Scotland.
