Description
Lethen House, dated 1788, features later additions and alterations from the 18th and 19th centuries. The building is constructed of pinned rubble with polished ashlar dressings. It has a symmetrical three-storey and attic, five-bay front facing south, with two-storey, wide single bay wings at the east and west gables that are slightly set back from the main block and project at the rear. The central door is framed by engaged columns and a corniced doorpiece, which is obscured by a later porte cochere that includes an ashlar balustrade. There are two later 19th century canted dormers. The flanking wings feature Venetian windows on the ground and first floors and have piended platform roofs. A projecting circular rear stairwell rises one storey above the wallhead, ending in a J-shaped flat roof from around 1865, which has an ashlar balustrade and terminal ball finials, along with a weather-vane. The stairwell connects to the end wings via later two-storey flat-roofed extensions.
The windows mainly have two-pane glazing, and there are corniced end stacks with slate roofs. Inside, there is a semi-circular stair with a cast-iron balustrade decorated with acanthus motifs. The first-floor drawing room features a simple plaster cornice from around 1800 and a marble chimney piece. A long corridor on the first floor has engaged pilasters linked by a ribbed, round-headed ceiling. The garden gate piers and railings include a pair of later 19th century decorative trellis cast-iron gate piers topped with pyramidal finials, each ending with a hand clasping a bunch of arrows. There is also a decorative cast-iron pedestrian gate with spearhead detailing, along with flanking low coped rubble walls and matching spearhead cast-iron railings.
