Description

Kennox is a predominantly mid 18th century house with significant early 19th century additions and alterations. It is a symmetrical, 2-storey and attic, 3-bay classical structure, featuring an earlier, lower, 2-storey and attic wing at the rear, creating a T-plan layout. The exterior is finished in cream-painted rubble with raised ashlar margins and quoins on the wing. It has a raised basement, a band course, an eaves course, and a cornice, along with a pair of piended dormers.

The principal elevation faces south and includes a central double fore stair with a decorative cast-iron balustrade leading to a pedimented doorpiece with Corinthian pilasters. This doorpiece features 2-leaf, 6-panel timber doors with a segmental glazing pattern and a semi-circular fanlight above, as well as a 2-leaf, metal diamond-pane internal door. A central Venetian window is located on the first floor.

To the rear, the north elevation shows a symmetrical 6-bay house with an advanced 2-bay gabled central section and a pair of piended roofed dormers. This section is single-storey to the north and includes a later glass cupola with the date inscribed as 1762 on the skewputt.

The windows throughout are predominantly 12-pane timber sash and case, and the roof is covered with graded grey slates. Gablehead stacks and raised skews are also present.

Inside, the original room plan in the main house is largely intact, although other areas have been significantly modified. Some decorative plasterwork and 4-panelled timber doors can still be seen.

The property features a pair of square-plan painted stone gatepiers with a base course, cornices, and graded capstones, along with ornamental iron gates. Flanking the gates are symmetrical low rubble walls with metal railings and decorative pedestrian gates that feature fretwork and key patterns topped with iron ogee designs. There is evidence of possible former gatehouses remaining to the east and west.

The boundary walls to the south are tall and coped, with sections flanking the gates that include blind windows and ashlar margins.
