Description

Hempriggs House is a large, 2-storey residence dated 1692 and 1875, though it is primarily from the 19th century and incorporates earlier elements. The house is built around a small inner court and is harled, featuring some ashlar dressings. The front elevation is asymmetrical with six bays, highlighted by a wide rectangular 2-storey entrance porch added in 1875. This porch has side doors, one of which features a re-used lintel, and a front tripartite design. The porch extends upwards as a canted bay window on the first floor, complete with a cornice and shaped blocking course.

The west elevation is wide and 2-storey, while the rear elevation is flanked by wide gables. The central entrance on the rear is round-headed and has been infilled with a modern door and window. A large wallhead stack is present, accompanied by a small attic window. The simple east range includes a service entrance and connects to a 2-storey L-plan stable block. The front windows feature 2- and 4-pane glazing, while the other elevations mainly have 12-pane glazing. The building has ridge and end coped stacks, with slate roofs, although modern tiles have been used on the rear.

The stables are an earlier to mid-19th century 2-storey L-plan range linked to the house by a small lean-to outbuilding. This stable range is constructed of rubble with tooled rubble dressings. The south-facing elevation includes a small 3-bay dwelling with a central door and flanking lying-pane glazed windows on the left, and a segmental-headed carriage house on the right, which has a loft window above. The north arm of the L-plan contains stables and a loft, with ridge and end stacks and slate roofs.
