Bank Of Scotland, Somerled Square, Portree, Skye

The Bank of Scotland, located in Somerled Square, Portree, Skye, is an asymmetrical Gothic villa designed by Matthews and Laurie in 1873. The building is constructed from coursed rubble with contrasting polished ashlar dressings and features stop-chamfered angles. It stands two storeys high with an attic and consists of three bays. The south (left) bay is advanced and includes a square crenellated projecting porch set in a re-entrant angle. The entrance features a pointed arch adorned with nailhead decoration, nook shafts, and a hoodmould.

On the ground floor, there are two tripartite shafted windows with stilted pointed arched heads, each under hoodmoulds with label stops. The first floor has three bipartite windows, with the outer ones set in bargeboarded gables and also featuring stilted pointed hoodmoulds with label stops. A gabled and bargeboarded dormer is present as well. Gothic detailing is evident on the side elevations, which include corniced end stacks and a slate roof.

There is a modern addition at the rear of the building, along with a low retaining wall that is topped with spearhead cast-iron railings.
