Description
Tigh Mhonaidh, near Invergarry, is an asymmetrical building dated 1880 and designed by John Rhind of Inverness. It combines a two-storey, single-bay gabled house to the west with a single-storey wing projecting to the east, which was formerly a hospital. The east wing features a large mullioned window in its gable, flanked by a projecting gabled porch with a round-headed entrance. The building is constructed of grey rubble with tooled red sandstone dressings. A datestone and monogram are set into the gable of the porch, and a small tripartite window illuminates its side elevation. Bipartite windows are found on the ground and first floors of the western dwelling. Most windows have two panes of glass. A coped ridge stack rises from the roof, which is covered in slate. The monogram is associated with the Ellice family, formerly of Invergarry House (now the Glengarry Hotel). Tigh-Mhonaidh was originally built as a hospital, an unusual amenity for a Highland village, and was provided for the village by Mr and Mrs E. Ellice. The Ellice Papers, held at the National Library of Scotland (references 15111/15112), contain further details.
