Description
The Roman Catholic Chapel of St Duthuc and its presbytery were designed by J A Hansom in 1871. A strong Roman Catholic presence existed within the parish by the 18th century, with a priest serving the area by 1793 but lacking a dedicated church building.
The chapel is a simple Gothic structure comprising a nave and chancel. It is built of rubble with tooled dressings. The nave has five bays, each with a lancet window, and a gabled porch at the northwest. The chancel is single bayed, with a geometrical tracery window in the east wall and paired cusped lights in the south wall. A bellcote with paired bells sits at the apex of the west gable, and the roof is slate-covered. Inside, a stone Gothic reredos with polished granite shafts forms a prominent feature. Further stone columns support the altar, and paired cusped lights illuminate a niche in the south wall. A demi-octagonal stone pulpit is set within the chancel arch, and the roof is a simple braced rafter design.
The presbytery is an asymmetrical, two-storey, two-bay gabled house. It is constructed of coursed rubble with painted stone margins, mullioned and transomed windows, and 2-pane glazing. A projecting gabled porch provides access to both the main house and the chapel vestry. Corniced end stacks rise from the roof, which is slate-covered. A single-storey gabled vestry adjoins the presbytery, with its entrance facing the chapel porch.
