Description
8-10 Garry Street in Glasgow is a four-storey red ashlar tenement building designed by Richard Henderson in 1908, featuring Art Nouveau detailing. It runs along the entire north side of Garry Street and has entrances on the return elevations. There have been some alterations, mainly to the glazing, although much of the original work remains intact. Additionally, there are modern steel strengthening beams that are concealed with render. The building has a small front garden area with low boundary walls, except on Spean Street, where shops are located.
Architecturally, the building showcases full-height bay windows and corner turrets, along with some sculptured detailing. The rhone pipes are prominently featured on the facade. The overall composition is symmetrical, typically consisting of two window bays with narrow center lights positioned between each pair of bay windows, though the treatment of the flanks varies slightly. The doorways are also paired for the close and ground flats, each topped with a lipped flat cornice and block detailing. The original sash and case glazing is mostly comprised of two-pane lower sashes and four or six-pane upper sashes, with some vertically-proportioned single-pane and four-pane slit windows. The building features wall-head stacks.
