Description
69-71 Bridge Street is a corner tenement building designed by James Miller in 1898. It is four stories high and features a four-by-five bay layout, showcasing the Glasgow style. The ground floor has been modernized for a pub and shop, although the entrance on Norfolk Street remains original.
The building is constructed from ashlar stone, with a plain ground floor that has been altered. Notable architectural features include a corbelled octagonal turret that rises from the first to the third floors, adorned with elaborate carving above the third floor and topped with an ogee roof. There are two large arched windows facing Norfolk Street, supported by corbelled oriels that extend through the second and third floors. A similar oriel is present on Bridge Street, along with a corbelled stack that projects from the first floor.
The windows are primarily two-paned sash and case, except for those that are arched, and prominent keystones enhance their appearance. The building is capped with a slate roof and tall chimney stacks, while the oriels have a swept roof design, and the turret features a bellcast roof with a finial.
