Description
The Mechanics Workshop at 23-25 Carlton Court in Glasgow dates from around 1880-1885 and served as stables and a mechanics shop for the Clyde Shipping Company. The mechanics shop is a three-storey building with an attic and features a nine-bay ashlar front, with brick sides and rear. The ground floor includes doors and a cart entry, while the first and second floors have a continuous cill string course and 12-pane sash and case windows. There is a dormer-head over a central hoist, with doors on the first, second, and attic floors. The building has a slate roof, with one gable end and one ridge stack above double smith's hearths on each floor, and a dormer hoist at the rear equipped with a block and tackle.
An L-shaped continuation of the mechanics shop is two to three storeys high, constructed of brick with a catslide roof. It also features a block and tackle under the dormer head leading to the yard, and includes a small dwelling house.
The stables are a two-storey structure with a hay loft, built of brick. A ramp with rope grip bands and a wooden Chinese balustrade leads to the first-floor horseboxes. There is a small dormer hoist with a block and tackle, a slate roof, and troughs located in the yard.
