Prince And Princess Of Wales Hospice, 69, 71, 72, 73 Carlton Place, Glasgow

80, 81, 83, and 84 Carlton Place in Glasgow is a classical terrace built between 1813 and 1818 by Peter Nicholson. This three-storey building features a 33-bay ashlar front, with the ground floor channelled.

The central six bays are highlighted by a Doric portico, which has a brass plate for the Clyde Shipping Company on the doors. Each of these bays contains three-light windows, flanked by narrow windows on either side of the entrance. The façade is adorned with seven giant Doric pilasters that extend through the first and second floors, topped with a Doric entablature and pediment.

On either side of the central block, there are three original half-pilastered doorways. The first-floor windows are lowered through the string course, and there are cast-iron balconies to the left of the central block. Number 84 retains its original six-pane upper sash windows on the first floor, while its ground floor windows have been lengthened.

Additionally, No 65 was converted for the Clydesdale Bank in 1903 by Baird and Thomson, featuring new aedicule entrances at the front and on the corner, both supported by polished granite Ionic columns. This section also includes an extra window on the ground floor and a five-bay continuation to South Portland Street.

The terrace is topped with a cornice and slate roof, featuring ridge stacks. The rear is constructed of rubble with projecting curved stair turrets. The front basement is enclosed by cast iron railings of various patterns, and some interior work still survives, particularly at No 78.
