Description

Bridge Street Station, located at 36, 38, and 40 Bridge Street in Glasgow, was designed by architect James Miller and engineer George Graham, with construction beginning in 1888 and the station opening in 1890. This 4-storey and attic railway station features an 18-bay upper level that includes three shops and offices, constructed from ashlar stone.

The central booking hall boasts a high ceiling and is fronted by four arches that are concealed by a fascia. There are stair entrances on either side, adorned with terracotta plaques that are dated "AD 1890" on the left and display the Caledonian Railway's lion rampant on the right. The ground floor shops are complemented by first-floor flats, which have 6-pane mullioned windows. The second floor features 20-pane cross windows, and narrow Ionic pilasters divide the bays on the upper floors, topped with an entablature and cornice.

In the attic, there are nine wallhead gabletted dormer windows, each with 30 panes. The roof has six stacks at the end ridge and along the front slope.

The elevation facing the railway is two storeys with an attic. At platform level, there are five arches, four of which retain their original windows, while one doorway is blocked. These arches are separated by Ionic pilasters and feature corniced mullioned windows along with three doors, two of which have segmental pediments. The first floor includes nine bipartite windows, one tripartite window, and one slit window. The attic has a wallhead stack and eight gabletted dormer windows of various sizes, all with original glazing patterns, and the roof is covered in slate.

Inside, there are stairs leading to the platform, and some cornicing and terracotta elements of the arcade have survived.
