Description

Thomas Baird, 1903-1905. Imposing range of tenements grouped around corner composition. Large main door and close entry four and five apartment houses. Sheer, unadorned walls with overscaled, mannered detailing and boldly-projecting balconies; Glasgow style. Red sandstone. Polished ashlar. Round arched, architraved close entrances flat-lintelled architraved main door and regular window openings with massive mannered keystones. Partickhill Road elevation: full-height parapetted bay windows, massive stone partly balustraded balcony to eastern bays at second floor (removed after 1993): boldly-projecting eaves. North Gardner Street elevation: continuing Partickhill Road detailing on corner then breaking into more elaborate treatment with regular full height parapetted bays corbelled out over close entrances on massive corbels. Sash and case windows (where original) with multi-paned upper sash (vertically divided in corner tenement). Soaring wallhead stacks breaking through eaves; stacks corbelled at eaves and dying into bracketted continuous cill course at third floor. Axial stacks. INTERIORS: Glasgow style close tiling, joinery detailing and stained glas throughout. Unusual fitted outer door arrangements to flat entrances.
