Description
6 North Gardner Street in Glasgow is an imposing range of tenement buildings designed by Thomas Baird between 1903 and 1905. The tenements are grouped around a corner composition and feature a large main door and close entry for four and five apartment houses. The exterior showcases sheer, unadorned walls with oversized, mannered detailing and boldly projecting balconies, characteristic of the Glasgow style. The building is constructed from red sandstone with polished ashlar finishes.
The close entrances are round arched and architraved, while the main door has a flat-lintelled architrave. Regular window openings are adorned with massive mannered keystones. On the Partickhill Road elevation, there are full-height parapetted bay windows and a massive stone balcony, which was partly balustraded on the eastern bays at the second floor but has been removed since 1993. The eaves project boldly.
The North Gardner Street elevation continues the detailing from Partickhill Road at the corner but transitions into a more elaborate design with regular full-height parapetted bays that are corbelled out over the close entrances on massive corbels. The windows are sash and case, where original, featuring multi-paned upper sashes that are vertically divided in the corner tenement. The building has soaring wallhead stacks that break through the eaves, with stacks corbelled at the eaves and dying into a bracketed continuous cill course at the third floor. There are axial stacks as well.
Inside, the tenements display Glasgow-style close tiling, joinery detailing, and stained glass throughout. There are also unusual fitted outer door arrangements at the flat entrances.
