Description

The Mercat Building, located at 17-23 London Road in Bridgeton, Glasgow, was designed by A Graham Henderson and constructed between 1928 and 1933. This large corner building features six floors, including four storeys and a double attic. It has a steel-framed structure with polished ashlar and black granite at the ground level, where shops are located. Above this, the building is clad in a light-coloured stone that has been cleaned to contrast with the darker granite. It includes small-paned metal-framed glazing.

At the corner, there is a prominent round-arched deep recess with an Ionic-columned screen, which showcases some sculptural details created by sculptors Alexander Proudfoot and Archibald Dawson. The flanking bays are regular, featuring deep window recesses. Giant pilaster strips separate the bays at the second and third floors, with bronze panels positioned between the floors. Above this, there is a main entablature, a full attic storey with metal balconies, and a slated mansard roof.
